The person's being engaged in one action costs a normative situation, either (i) having failed to do what he or she is supposed to do or (ii) being in an extra-ordinary (usually negative) situation.

Situation. 진우 영어 좀 가르쳐 주느라고 늦었어.

호스트 아주머니가 문을 여러 번 두드렸는데 민수가 못 들었습니다. 왜 못 들었습니까? 호스트 아주머니는 왜 민수 공부 걱정을 했습니까? 민수는 민지하고 만나기로 했는데 약속시간에 늦게 왔습니다. 왜 늦었습니까?

More examples:

마틴은 사람들하고 만나기로 했는데 늦게 왔습니다. 왜 늦었습니까?	대니는 요즘 어떻게 지냅니까?	나라는 왜 친구 생일 파티에 못 갔습니까?

Responsive exercise:

1. Find a reason why the speaker is at odd with the current situation.

남자는 왜 늦었습니까? 꽃을 사 오느라고 늦었습니다.

2. Respond to the given questions by making reference (with ~느라고) to a situation that has caused the situation at issue; You have been led to a situation because you were engaged in/preoccupied with another action.

• 요즘 어떻게 지내세요?

• 오늘 숙제 다 했어요?

• 어제 잘 잤어요?

• 어제 . . . 봤어요?

• 지난 주에 Korean Conversation Club에 갔어요?

Speaking activity:
Imagine that one is supposed to be in the situtaions given below, but s/he fails to be in them because s/he was engaged in another situation. Expand the conversation creatively and spontaneously. Use the patterns we have learned so far as much as you can, e.g., ~느라고, ~거든요, ~네요 !, ~(으)면, ~는 동안 , etc.

Model dialogue

유진:	마이클 씨, 어제 IU 농구 봤어요?
마이클:	아니요, Ch 7에서 영화 보느라고 못 봤어요. 누가 이겼어요?
유진:	IU가 이겼어요.
마이클:	유진 씨 농구 좋아하세요?
유진:	네. 농구를 보면 스트레스가 풀리거든요.
마이클:	참, 지난 주말에 전화했는데 집에 없던데요.
유진:	네, 친구 만나느라고 인디애나폴리스에 갔다 왔어요.
마이클:	어떤 친구예요?
유진:	고등학교 동창 (classmate, alumnus)이에요. 3년동안 이 친구를 못 만났었거든요.
마이클:	반가웠겠네요! [반갑다 'be pleased to see someone']
유진:	그럼요.
