Some verbs such as 알다/모르다 (to know/not know), 궁금하다 (wonder, be curious), 물어보다 (to ask) are often accompanied by an interrogative phrase, because the content of what they know (or not know), wonder, are curious about, or ask is not a statement but a question in nature. The interrogative phrase is marked by ~(으)ㄴ/는지.

~(으)ㄴ/는지 알아요 is used for an indirection question where the speaker does not request unknown information directly as in 'Who did not come to the party?' but asks if the listener has that information in question. This way reduces the burden of having to provide the information on the part of the listener, so that it is more polite.

The conjugation of ~(으)ㄴ/는지 is the same as ~(으)ㄴ/는데; that is, verbs take ~는지, adjectives take ~(으)ㄴ지, the Copula -이- takes ㄴ지, but with ~었/았- all predicates take ~는지.
