~게 되다 indicates a change of situation or turn of events which the agent comes/gets to. It literally means that the situation becomes in such a way that the agent will do the action referred to by . . .게. [cf. ~어/아지다 for expressing change of states.]

민지:	언제부터 한국어를 배우기 시작했어요?
유진:	대학교 1학년 때부터 배우기 시작했어요.
민지:	어떻게 한국어를 배우게 됐어요?
유진:	한국 룸메이트가 있어서 배우게 됐어요.
민지:	그럼 한국에도 가 봤어요?
유진:	아니요, 아직 못 가 봤어요. 그래서 이번 겨울에 가 보려구요.
