1. Course Description
KOREAN 101 is the first half of the elementary Korean language course. This course is designed for those who have no previous (or very limited) knowledge of the Korean language. Emphasis will be placed on the fundamentals of listening, speaking, and the introduction of Korean culture. After mastering the Korean alphabets, students will learn to describe, narrate, and ask/answer simple questions in the three basic tenses (present, past, and future) about themselves, family, and daily activities. By the end of the course, students will be able to communicate with Korean native speakers at basic everyday survival tasks including (1) self-introduction, (2) asking questions, (3) counting numbers, (4) giving directions, (5) expressing needs, and (6) making requests.
Classes are divided into two parts: two hours of lectures and three hours of drill sections. Lectures will introduce new material and provide explanations on those conversational patterns in grammatical and pragmatic terms.
Drill sections will provide the students with opportunities to practice in actual communicative situations with various tasks and activities. Among the three drill sessions, Monday will be designated mainly for reports on weekend, oral performances, and chapter quizzes. Besides chapter quizzes, there are vocabulary and/or dictation quizzes daily.

Homework
(1) Lab activity: Lab activity is required. For each week, you are expected to practice the assigned lab material at least for 30 min.
(2) Speaking HW (10pts): record videos of yourself speaking Korean about the given topic/record your lab activities. Go to Canvas and click “discussion”. You will see the assignments for each week. Add your video as a reply. Late submission will result in point deduction (after due date: -2.5 pts, next day: -5 pts)
(2) Written HW (20pts): Written assignments will also be given regularly on the workbook/lab materials. *Grading policy (Written HW)
1) Points will be deducted for your spelling/grammar mistake (1-2 mistakes: No deduction, 3-5 mistakes: -1 pt, 6-8 mistakes: -2 pts, 9-11 mistakes: -3 pts, etc.)
2) Late submission will result in point deduction (after class: -5 pts, next day:-10pts)
3) Incompletion of each section; -5 pts.
Examinations
(1) Vocabulary test will be given twice per Lesson and Dictation test every drill session.
(2) There will be 7 Lesson tests and 1 Hangul test. Grammar, reading, listening and writing will be the principal items tested in the lesson tests.
*There will be no makeup exam unless provided with a written proof for a justifiable reason. In case a make up exam is granted, it must be done within a week from
the original exam date.

Class Attendance and Participation & Class Policies
(1) Attendance check will be strictly enforced; extremely low attendance may lower your final grade further, unless a written proof of inevitable circumstance is provided; no more than 5 excuses will be granted; more than 5 absences will result in one grade scale down, and more than 10 absences in lectures and drill sections all together will result in an F for the course. A tardy (10 minutes late arrival or early leave) will be counted as a half absence.
(2) This course is a language and culture class and your participation is very important. Participation is 15% of your total grade along with attendance. Your performance in each drill section will be monitored and graded by your AI each day. The grading criteria not only includes your Korean language performance, but also your attitude, cooperation, preparation and participation.
Distracting behavior and disrespectful behavior such as uninvited casual talk among students, sleeping, use of lap tops, cell phones, and any other electronic device, not bringing class materials to class, studying for other class, doing homework, long/frequent breaks, etc. are strongly discouraged and will be noted for participation grade deduction.
Extra credit (Event/Movie review: 0.5% each)
Students may submit up to 4 reviews of a Korean event or movie (up to 2 per category: e.g. 3 movie reviews will not be accepted). Participating in Korean events such as Korean Conversation Club, Korean film showing, cultural events, etc. will be awarded extra-credits upon submitting a report. The report for each event must be submitted within a week from the day of the event attended. Attach a flyer or ticket from the event to your review. A review has to have at least 7 meaningful Korean sentences.

When you submit a paper with your name on it in this course, you are signifying that the work contained therein is all yours, unless otherwise cited or referenced. Any ideas or materials taken from another source for either written or oral use must be fully acknowledged. If you are unsure about the expectations for completing an assignment or taking a test or exam, be sure to seek clarification beforehand. All suspected violations of the Code will be handled according to University policies. Sanctions for academic misconduct may include a failing grade on the assignment, reduction in your final grade, a failing grade in the course, among other possibilities, and must include a report to the Dean of Students.
